09/2001 to 12/2003
I acquired and managed (part time) a small metal manufacturing company in East Portland. Sierra was a manufacturer, wholesaler, and global retailer of pedal steel guitars and lap (Hawaiian) steel guitars and accessories.
I did marketing planning and materials development, product development, production planning/purchasing, accounting/finance, information systems, and human resources, as well as day-to-day management of the company (3 people). I set up and operated a full accounting and mini ERP system, created a part number system, bills-of-materials, and a design data archive, which were previously missing in the company. I used SolidWorks to model almost 5,000 parts and subassemblies used across all product lines.
I expanded the lap steel line to include 6, 10, and 12 string models, as well as adding telescoping legs and real wood body options. For the first time, lap steels became 30% of the products sold, with a corresponding 10% increase in sales volume for the company.
